Air travel can be stressful, with long lines, delays, and poor service often making the experience a hassle. But the frustration doesn’t end at the terminal—many irritating behaviors occur once you’re onboard. One especially common annoyance is passengers standing up and crowding the aisle before the plane has even stopped moving. If you’ve done this or witnessed it, consider yourself warned—Turkey is cracking down.
The Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation, led by Kemal Yüksek, has introduced strict new guidelines targeting this behavior. Passengers who unbuckle seat belts, stand prematurely, open overhead bins, or block the aisle before the aircraft reaches its gate may face penalties. According to the Washington Post, violators could be fined up to 2,603 Turkish lira—around $67.
Yüksek emphasized that such actions jeopardize both passenger safety and comfort, disrupting disembarkation order and baggage handling. Cabin crew have been instructed to report offenders for administrative punishment under Turkish aviation law.
So, next time you land in Turkey, stay seated and respect the process—or you might face a costly welcome before even stepping off the plane.
