A 7-year-old boy from India miraculously survived after a freak accident lodged a nearly 3-inch iron nail in his brain. The incident occurred in Balrampur district while the boy was playing and accidentally fell, landing on the nail. It pierced through his neck and extended into his skull, barely missing a major blood vessel, according to doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow.
Initially taken to a nearby hospital, the child was transferred to KGMU on May 16 for emergency surgery. MRI scans revealed the nail had traveled from his lower jaw up to his brainstem. The delicate four-hour procedure involved experts from Neurosurgery and ENT departments.
“This was a very complicated case,” said Dr. Sandip Tiwari. “The nail had to be carefully removed without damaging the brain or nerves connecting the mouth and brain.”
Prof. Samir Misra added that even a minor error could have been fatal. The surgery was successful, and the boy was moved to the Pediatric ICU.
KGMU plans to document the rare case for publication in an international medical journal, calling it a landmark contribution to medical science.
