The daughter?

A case that has shocked all of Europe came to light this week, after a mother was arrested for abandoning her 16-month-old daughter to go on vacation for more than a week. The tragic outcome has sparked a heated social debate about parental negligence and the limits of human selfishness.

Verphy Kudi, an 18-year-old mother, left her little Asiah alone in her Brighton, England, apartment with no adult to care for her while she embarked on a multi-city trip to celebrate her birthday. According to police reports, Verphy partied for six days, visiting London, Coventry, and Solihull, while her daughter slowly died of starvation and dehydration.

The building’s security cameras captured the young woman leaving her apartment on December 5. She didn’t return until December 11. Upon returning, she called emergency services when she found her daughter unconscious, but it was too late. Paramedics confirmed that Asiah had died hours earlier.

An autopsy revealed that the little girl died from extreme neglect: she showed signs of severe dehydration, prolonged starvation, and a viral infection. The scene in the apartment was heartbreaking: the baby had been alone, without food, clean diapers, or any assistance, for six full days.

Verphy Kudi was immediately arrested and charged with negligent homicide and child abandonment. During the trial, the mother admitted to acting irresponsibly, but claimed to be “overwhelmed by motherhood and eager to regain her personal freedom.” However, her words did not convince the judge, who described her actions as “an unforgivable betrayal of the trust and love that a child places in his mother.”

The court sentenced her to nine years in prison , although many consider the sentence insufficient given the magnitude of the damage caused.

The case has sparked a wave of public outrage. Social media was filled with messages of condemnation, where thousands of people expressed their grief and helplessness over Asiah’s death. “A mother who prioritizes a party over her daughter’s life deserves neither compassion nor excuses,” wrote one Twitter user.

Meanwhile, child protection organizations in the United Kingdom have called for an urgent review of monitoring protocols for young and at-risk mothers to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.

Little Asiah was buried in an intimate ceremony, surrounded by white flowers and attended by community members who, although they didn’t know her, wanted to bid her farewell with dignity. Her story has left a profound mark and an urgent call to the collective conscience: motherhood is not a game, and a child’s life cannot be put on hold for fun.
