I worked late again, drowning in deadlines, when Aunt Jenny called—“Don’t forget your mama’s wedding tomorrow!” My world tilted. Wedding? Mom hadn’t told me. I drove to her house, heart racing. She opened the door with a sigh. “I was waiting for the right moment,” she said. I’d nearly missed the one moment that mattered most.
“Am I even invited?” I asked. She hesitated. That pause told me everything.
“It’s just family,” she said.
“I am family!” I snapped.
Tears welled in her eyes. “That’s why I can’t have you there.”
Heartbroken, I whispered, “Mom, you’re marrying my boss.”
She didn’t deny it. Silence said it all.
“Apparently,” he said, smiling too.
I danced, laughed, and watched my mother glow in her new husband’s arms. Complicated? Absolutely. But beautiful too. As Aunt Jenny said, Mama deserved happiness. And maybe I did too. Monday would be awkward, but for once, I welcomed the unknown—with hope instead of fear.
