Pretty Woman is one of those magical films that never gets old. But few fans know the original version was much darker. The original script, 3,000 by J.F. Lawton, painted Edward as a cold yuppie and Vivian as a struggling drug user.
Julia Roberts even said she would’ve never taken that role, calling it “too dark.”When Disney reworked it into the romantic fairy tale we know today, it became a classic. Still, some deleted scenes offer surprising depth.
The Director’s Cut includes an extended first meeting between Vivian and Edward, a tense scene with pimp Carlos, and even a sweet horse-riding moment that gave more insight into Vivian’s world. These scenes show a grittier side of her life and add balance to her transformation.
Fans also love the fun behind-the-scenes facts — like how Kit’s line “Cinde-f**kin’-rella” became “Cinderella” for TV, complete with a reshot scene.Ultimately, the final cut’s dreamy tone is what made Pretty Woman so beloved.
But discovering these lost moments years later adds fresh magic to the film. It’s fun to imagine what could’ve been — and to appreciate what we got. What do you think? Should any of those deleted scenes have stayed?
