The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of eastern and south-eastern England, in effect from 20:00 BST Friday to 05:00 Saturday. The alert spans areas from Eastbourne in Sussex to Cromer in north Norfolk, raising concerns over potential flash flooding, power outages, and major travel disruptions.
Heavy downpours, with rainfall reaching 30-50mm in some regions, and wind gusts exceeding 50mph are expected. The Met Office warns of fast-flowing or deep floodwater that may pose a danger to life, alongside frequent lightning and rapidly deteriorating travel conditions.
In addition to the amber warning, yellow warnings are also in place for parts of eastern and southern England and Wales, where similar thunderstorm activity may occur but more locally. Residents in affected areas are advised to avoid travel where possible, stay indoors, and check on vulnerable individuals who may require assistance with essentials.
The weather warning comes amid a surge in heat and humidity, particularly in East Anglia and the southeast. Temperatures are expected to peak on Friday, with highs potentially hitting 30°C (86°F) around the Norwich area. If confirmed, this would mark the hottest day of 2025 so far, surpassing the 29.3°C recorded in Kew, London, on 1 May.
The Met Office urges people to remain cautious and take preventative steps during the storm, including staying away from floodwater, securing outdoor objects, and preparing for potential power outages. Travelers should expect delays and cancellations to train and bus services, and motorists should drive carefully due to wet and windy road conditions.
Thunderstorm activity will continue into Saturday, affecting parts of Wales, western and northern England, and Scotland. A yellow warning is in effect across:
- South-west England and Wales from 14:00 to 23:59 on Friday
- Eastern and south-eastern England from 19:00 Friday to 06:00 Saturday
- Wales, western and northern England, and Scotland from 00:00 to 18:00 on Saturday
While high temperatures have defined the week’s weather, Saturday will bring a cooldown. Highs in the low to mid-20s are expected in eastern England, with temperatures in the high teens elsewhere, marking a significant drop from Friday’s peak.
