She Thought She

Emily thought losing her best friend Rachel was the hardest part of her life—until Rachel’s sister showed up with a child, a backpack, and a secret.

“I need to talk to you and Daniel,” Amanda said. Her hands trembled around an envelope. “It’s about Lily.”

Rachel’s daughter. The girl Emily had helped raise. The girl Daniel once adored—until he began to avoid her.

Amanda’s voice broke the silence: “Daniel is her father.”

Daniel’s face turned white. Then he collapsed.

Later, gasping for breath on the floor, he confessed: “I didn’t cheat. I didn’t say yes. I passed out. I woke up and she was already on top of me.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Emily asked him to leave—temporarily. She needed time.

Alone, she stared at Lily’s pink backpack, remembering Rachel’s laugh and wondering how much of it had been real.

Then, days later, a friend reminded her: “Rachel had time to tell you. She didn’t. That silence said everything.”

That night, Emily called Daniel.

“I believe you,” she whispered.

He paused.

Then said, “I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.
