An alleged active shooter was shot and killed Sunday morning by a church security guard, preventing what authorities say could have been a mass casualty event at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan.
According to Wayne Police, the incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. when 31-year-old Brian Anthony Browning exited his vehicle wearing a tactical vest and armed with a long gun and handgun. As he approached the church, he began firing.
A quick-thinking parishioner struck Browning with a vehicle while he fired at it. Moments later, at least two church staff members engaged the suspect. One, a security team member, was shot in the leg but is recovering after surgery. The gunman was fatally shot at the scene.
Police believe Browning was suffering a mental health crisis. He had no criminal history and had previously attended services.
Authorities confirmed there’s no indication the attack was connected to recent Middle East tensions.
The FBI and other agencies are assisting in the investigation. A bomb squad and K9 unit were deployed but found no explosives.
Police praised the church’s staff for their bravery in preventing further bloodshed.
