Woman Mistakes Deadly Illness for Perimenopause—Dies Suddenly
Laura Dawson, 44, believed her fatigue and bloating were signs of perimenopause—until severe stomach pain landed her in the ER. Emergency surgery revealed a blockage and, heartbreakingly, stage 3 bowel cancer.
Though initial scans were hopeful, the cancer returned aggressively. After months of chemotherapy, Laura chose to stop treatment, spending her final weeks with family.
Supported by St. Christopher’s Hospice, she passed peacefully on June 29, with husband Ben by her side. “She knew she was dying,” Ben said, “but that gave her the chance to live more fully.” Laura called her final days “some of the happiest,” embracing small joys and creating memories for her two sons, ages 17 and 15.
“She bought them watches,” Ben shared, “so they’ll feel her presence on their big days.”
Despite the tragedy, Laura’s openness about death helped her family cope. “We said everything we needed to,” Ben said. “She died knowing she was deeply loved.”
Laura’s story is now helping others face life’s end with honesty and courage. “She saw beauty in the small things,” Ben reflected. “She was always grateful just to have the glass.”
