Donald Trump has named former MTV reality star and U.S. congressman Sean Duffy as the interim head of NASA, a move that’s raised eyebrows across political and scientific communities. Duffy, best known in the late 1990s for appearing on The Real World: Boston, once made headlines for dancing suggestively in a towel during a hotel scene captured on camera. That footage recently resurfaced but hasn’t derailed his political trajectory.
Since his reality TV days, Duffy transitioned into public service, first becoming a district attorney in Wisconsin, then serving in Congress from 2010 to 2019. In January 2025, Trump appointed him as Transport Secretary, praising his efforts to modernize infrastructure and rebuild America’s transportation systems. Now, Duffy steps into a temporary leadership role at NASA following Janet Petro.
Trump defended his choice on Truth Social, stating, “Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job and will be a fantastic leader, even if only for a short time.” Duffy responded on social media with enthusiasm: “Honored to accept this mission. Let’s launch.”
Despite his unconventional background, Duffy’s rise highlights Trump’s preference for loyalty, charisma, and media familiarity over traditional qualifications
