Why Your Underwear Has Bleached Patches — And Why It’s Totally Normal

Ever noticed light patches in the crotch area of your black underwear after just a few wears? Don’t worry—it’s completely normal and nothing to stress over. The culprit isn’t your washing machine or poor fabric quality—it’s your vagina’s natural discharge.
Vaginal discharge is slightly acidic, with a pH between 3.5 and 7. This acidity helps maintain a healthy balance of bacteria, but it can also bleach fabric, especially dark-colored underwear. White or yellowish stains may show up over time, especially during hormonal shifts, ovulation, or pregnancy.
To minimize the effect, try wearing pantyliners, rinsing underwear immediately after wearing, or using enzyme-based stain removers. Some even re-dye their favorite black pairs!
Remember: vaginal discharge is a healthy, self-cleaning process. Most people produce about 4ml daily. Normal discharge is clear, white, or cream-colored with a mild scent. But if you notice changes—like a strong odor, itching, or unusual color—it’s a good idea to consult your doctor.
As Dr. Alex Eskander says, “Bleached patches are nothing to worry about. They’re simply proof your body is working exactly as it should.”
