A Long Island man is in critical condition after being pulled into an MRI machine on July 16. Despite warnings, he entered the MRI room wearing a metal necklace. The machine’s magnetic force dragged him in, causing a medical emergency. He remains hospitalized, according to Nassau County police and PIX11.

North Shore University Hospital staff warned CBS News about the severe dangers of entering an MRI room without clearance. Metal objects, like jewelry or wheelchairs, can become deadly projectiles. Experts say the magnetic force is 21,000 times stronger than Earth’s field—strong enough to cause strangulation or spinal injuries if precautions are ignored.

The department adds that even something as small as a paperclip can become a dangerous projectile, flying through the air at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.

Despite how powerful and potentially hazardous these machines can be, CBS News also noted that injuries or deaths caused by MRI scanners are rare, especially ones linked to items like jewelry.
