Every Time My MIL Got Close,

They say dogs notice what we overlook and feel what we brush aside. When my mother-in-law offered to take my kids for the weekend, my dog, Daisy, cried at the door like her world had collapsed.

An uneasy feeling gripped my chest, pushing me to check in on the children—and what I found at Linda’s confirmed what Daisy had been warning me about all along.

I’m Rachel. I used to believe the people closest to my children were the most trustworthy. But sometimes, it’s the familiar faces you must watch the closest.

Daisy, our loyal German Shepherd, had always been calm and affectionate. But when my mother-in-law Linda returned from Millbrook, Daisy growled like never before. She circled, blocked, and inserted herself between Linda and the kids.

When Linda asked to take them for the weekend, Daisy barked so wildly I almost canceled. But I gave in.

The next day, I arrived unannounced. Inside Linda’s garden sat my kids—and a strange, twitchy man named Marcus. Linda called him an “artist,” hired to paint them. But it was a lie—he was her secret boyfriend.

I took the kids and left.

David was furious. His trust in his mother was gone.

Afterward, Daisy returned to her gentle self. She’d seen the danger we ignored.

Trust your instincts. And never ignore the ones who love you unconditionally.
