
Anchorage, Alaska – A powerful 8.2-magnitude undersea earthquake struck off Alaska’s southern coast at 2:30 a.m. local time, triggering tsunami warnings and mass evacuations.

The U.S. Geological Survey located the epicenter 56 miles southeast of Perryville, at a depth of 29 miles. The quake, classified as a megathrust event, caused several aftershocks, including a 6.1 tremor. Tsunami waves—up to 20 feet—were recorded in parts of coastal Alaska, prompting urgent evacuations in areas like Kodiak and Sand Point. Though no fatalities have been reported, injuries and property damage are confirmed. Emergency teams and the U.S. Coast Guard are actively responding. Tsunami advisories remain in effect as authorities continue monitoring sea-level changes and potential aftershocks.
