Bed bug infestations can be frustrating, and natural methods like diatomaceous earth (DE) and cloves are gaining interest as low-toxicity options. DE is a fine powder made from fossilized algae that damages insect exoskeletons, causing dehydration. Only food-grade DE should be used indoors, applied lightly to mattress seams, cracks, and baseboards, then left for several days before vacuuming. Reapply weekly if needed, and avoid inhaling dust.
Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with a strong aroma and potential insect-repelling properties. While not a proven bed bug killer, cloves may discourage pests. Whole cloves in breathable sachets can be placed in closets or drawers, and diluted clove oil spray may be used on surfaces, keeping it away from pets and children.
DE and cloves may also deter ants, fleas, or cockroaches when used with regular cleaning and sealing entry points. They work best as part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which includes clutter reduction, hot washing bedding, and using bed bug interceptors.
For severe infestations, professional pest control remains the most reliable solution.
