Parenting a teen is never easy—especially when they start acting like the rules no longer apply. For Alaska single mom Heidi Johnson, that moment came in 2015 when her 13-year-old son Aaron, flush with income from his YouTube channel, became “mouthy, defiant, and disrespectful.”
After a heated argument over chores, Aaron declared he could do whatever he wanted. Instead of yelling, Heidi wrote a formal “bill” for rent, utilities, food, and maid service—taping it to his door. It ended with: “If you’d rather be my child again instead of a roommate, we can renegotiate terms.”
Aaron was furious, storming out. But by the next day, he returned quieter, giving up privileges and admitting he’d acted entitled. They drafted a “family contract,” and the incident brought them closer.
Before Aaron even saw it, Heidi had posted the letter online—unaware her settings were public. It went viral worldwide, sparking debate over tough love vs. public shaming.
Heidi stands by it: “Freedom comes with responsibility. Parenting is about preparing them to live without us one day.”

Heidi and Aaron continued to navigate the teen years together, with more open conversations and clearer boundaries. The viral fame faded, but the lesson didn’t.
