A home invasion in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley left 62-year-old former teacher Holly Hatcher dead and her husband, Michael Hatcher, injured before he fatally shot the attacker. Around midnight on Aug. 3, authorities say 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker entered the Hatcher home with a large knife in a seemingly random act. Walker stabbed Holly before a violent struggle with Michael, who retrieved a pistol from his vehicle and fired one fatal shot.
The couple’s son, 31-year-old rising country singer Spencer Hatcher, canceled several shows to grieve. Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson, a family friend whose son had Holly as a teacher, called the incident “highly unusual” in his 31-year career.
Walker, of Pikesville, Maryland, had no violent record. Days earlier, he crashed a car, rented a campsite at Endless Caverns, and bought a knife at Walmart. His motive remains unknown.
Rockingham County Public Schools remembered Holly as a beloved educator of 19 years. Michael thanked the community for its overwhelming support. Signed to Stone Country Records, Spencer promised to make up missed performances, expressing gratitude for fans’ compassion during his family’s tragedy.
