The Tattooed Mum Who Won’t Conform
Melissa Sloan, 46, from Wales, has spent 26 years covering herself in tattoos — around 800 in total — earning the label of “freak” from strangers and exclusion from her community. Despite this, her two children, aged 8 and 10, still see her as a role model.
Since her first tattoo at 20, Sloan has become so dedicated that she carries her tattoo gun in her car, often receiving three “prison style” tattoos a week from her partner. Her inked face and body have cost her jobs — even cleaning toilets — and invite constant public ridicule. “The more I have, the more they think I’m a freak,” she says.
She’s been barred from school events and endures verbal abuse whenever she leaves home, but she tells her children to “take no notice.” Both share her interest in body art, wearing temporary tattoos until they’re old enough for the real thing.
Sloan shares before-and-after photos online, unrecognizable from her pre-ink days. She accepts she’ll never fit in — and insists she’ll always be herself, no matter the cost.
