Marian Robinson, mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama and a beloved Obama family matriarch, died peacefully Friday morning at age 86, surrounded by loved ones, the family announced.

Born Marian Lois Shields in Chicago in 1937, she was one of seven children raised on the South Side. She married Fraser C. Robinson, instilling in them values of education, integrity, and hard work.

Robinson was a steady, private presence during Barack Obama’s presidency, moving into the White House in 2009 to help care for granddaughters Malia and Sasha. Though rarely in the public eye, she played a crucial role in maintaining stability for the family amid political life.
Michelle Obama called her mother her “rock,” while Barack Obama praised her grace and quiet strength. Tributes from public figures and citizens alike have highlighted her humility, dignity, and devotion to family.

Funeral plans have not been announced. The Obamas have requested privacy during this time of mourning.
