Many parents enjoy showing off adorable photos of their newborns, and Patricia Williams was no different. In 2012, she proudly snapped pictures of her baby boy, Redd. At first, she didn’t think much of his unusually white hair, especially since both she and her husband were blond. But within two months, she noticed his eyes constantly darting from side to side. A quick search revealed this could be a sign of albinism.
At first doubtful, Patricia and her husband Dale consulted specialists, and Redd was diagnosed with Oculocutaneous Albinism Type 1 (OCA1), a rare genetic condition affecting 1 in 17,000 people worldwide. His striking white hair and vivid blue eyes made him stand out everywhere he went. When his younger brother Rockwell was born in 2018, he was also diagnosed with the same condition.
Unfortunately, photos of Rockwell were stolen online and turned into cruel memes. The family soon realized they couldn’t stop the teasing, but instead chose to raise awareness about albinism. Today, Redd and Rockwell are thriving, proving that their differences are beautiful and worth celebrating.
