Skin fungi are microorganisms that naturally live on the body. However, in warm and moist conditions, they can overgrow and cause infections. Common examples include ringworm (dermatophytosis), cutaneous candidiasis in moist areas, onychomycosis in the nails, and pityriasis versicolor, which causes discolored patches.
Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that appears as red, itchy, circular rashes. Different types are named by the body part affected. Tinea corporis occurs on the arms, legs, or torso, while tinea capitis affects the scalp, often causing hair loss in children. Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) leads to cracking and odor between the toes. Tinea cruris (jock itch) affects the groin, and tinea unguium attacks the nails, making them brittle and discolored.
Fungi spread through contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated objects like towels and combs. Public showers, gyms, and swimming pools are also common sources.
Treatment includes topical antifungals such as clotrimazole or terbinafine for mild cases, while oral medications like itraconazole may be needed for severe scalp or nail infections.
Prevention is key: maintain good hygiene, keep skin dry, avoid sharing personal items, and wear protective footwear in public areas.
