A deadly tornado outbreak that began Friday devastated parts of the South and Midwest, leaving at least 18 people dead. The storms intensified on Saturday, striking Mississippi and Louisiana and prompting a rare Tornado Emergency in Taylorsville, Mississippi.
Days earlier, the Storm Prediction Center had issued its highest threat level, warning of violent EF4-strength tornadoes. The first twisters touched down in Arkansas and Missouri before sweeping south. On Saturday alone, more than a dozen tornadoes were reported, with Mississippi and Alabama hardest hit. In Walthall County, two powerful tornadoes struck within 45 minutes, while three deaths were confirmed in Tylertown. Initial surveys suggest some tornadoes reached EF3 strength with winds up to 165 mph.
As damage assessments continued, over 50,000 customers were left without power. Officials warned the toll could rise as search and rescue efforts stretched into Sunday, with nearly 70 million people under threat from Florida to the Northeast.
Adding to the chaos, Mississippi was rattled by an earthquake that further complicated recovery efforts. Authorities continue to assess the full scope of destruction from both disasters as communities struggle to recover.
