The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Unlocking Our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2025, a major Republican-backed bill designed to reverse President Biden’s pause on new natural gas export approvals. Championed by House Speaker Mike Johnson, the legislation aims to remove federal limits on LNG exports and restore Trump-era energy policies.
Johnson said the bill reflects a unified GOP effort to lower energy costs, support American workers, and strengthen national security. He argued that Biden’s pause harmed U.S. energy producers, raised consumer prices, and slowed support for foreign allies dependent on American natural gas.
The bill would eliminate the Department of Energy’s role in granting LNG export approvals and shift that authority entirely to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It would also speed up permitting, codify previous executive orders, and reduce regulatory delays. Supporters say these changes would prevent future political decisions from disrupting the energy sector.
Top Republicans, including Rep. Brett Guthrie and Rep. August Pfluger, praised the bill as a step toward energy independence. The measure now heads to the Senate. Lawmakers say expanding natural gas production could help older Americans by lowering utility costs, improving reliability, and supporting jobs in energy-producing regions.
