The city was shaken Monday evening by the death of 20-year-old Mariana Gómez,
an innocent bystander killed during a shooting on Fifth Street. Police said the incident happened around 5:30 p.m.
in a busy commercial area when a group of armed men opened fire on a local merchant in what appeared to be a targeted attack.
Mariana had been walking in the area, reportedly on her way to submit a résumé, when the gunfire began.
Witnesses described people running for safety as chaos spread through the street.
Mariana was caught in the crossfire and seriously injured.
Bystanders immediately tried to help, and she was taken to a nearby medical center. Despite emergency treatment, she did not survive.
The incident has left the community grieving a young woman whose life was cut short just as she was starting her future.
