The University of Wyoming was shaken by tragedy on February 22, 2024, when three student-athletes from the swimming and diving program lost their lives in a devastating crash along U.S. Highway 287 near the Colorado–Wyoming border. The fatal rollover occurred shortly before 2:45 p.m. in an area known for unpredictable conditions and previous collisions.
The victims were identified as Charlie Clark, 19, of Las Vegas; Luke Slabber, 21, of Cape Town; and Carson Muir, 18, of Birmingham. All three were remembered as dedicated athletes, strong students, and kind teammates who brought energy and heart to the program. Two other student-athletes survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to investigators, the group was traveling in a Toyota RAV4 when the driver swerved, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and roll multiple times. The university quickly offered counseling and support, while students, staff, and state leaders expressed deep grief.
Vigils, tributes, and memorial messages poured in as the community honored the athletes’ lives and legacies. Though their time was cut short, Charlie, Luke, and Carson will be remembered for their spirit, leadership, and the remarkable impact they made on campus.
