A 24-year-old Indiana man, Jonathan Wesley Peternel, son of prominent megachurch pastor Nathan Peternel, has been arrested on seven felony charges, including child exploitation. Authorities took him into custody on October 23 following a Hamilton County Metro Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force investigation. The case began after Snapchat submitted a CyberTip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, reporting five files of suspected child sexual abuse material involving prepubescent children.
A search of Peternel’s home uncovered over 200 files of alleged child sexual abuse material, including extreme and violent images, digitally created content, and depictions of children appearing impaired. These discoveries led to multiple felony charges; Peternel has pled not guilty to all counts.
The arrest has cast a shadow over Life Church, where Pastor Nathan Peternel serves. Reports emerged that investigators found private recordings involving his parents among the seized files. Pastor Peternel addressed the congregation, admitting the recordings existed but stating they were “unwise but not sinful.” Life Church released a statement expressing sorrow and a commitment to integrity, accountability, and transparency. Assemblies of God superintendent Chad McAtee publicly defended Pastor Nathan, affirming his character and dedication to faith and family.
