Anthony Geary, the eight-time Daytime Emmy Award–winning actor who became a television legend through his portrayal of Luke Spencer on General Hospital, has died at the age of 78.
The show confirmed his passing in a statement shared on its official Instagram account, describing the loss as heartbreaking. “Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for,” the statement read, adding that both Geary’s legacy and that of Luke Spencer will live on through future generations of the cast. The show extended condolences to his husband, Claudio Gama, as well as his family and friends.

Gama later told TV Insider that Geary died in the Netherlands following complications from a scheduled medical procedure. “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband,” he said, calling the loss a profound shock.

Born May 29, 1947, in Coalville, Utah, Geary studied acting at the University of Utah before beginning his career on stage and television in the early 1970s. His work on General Hospital cemented his status as one of daytime television’s most enduring and influential stars.
