“To use someone’s tragic death to promote your own vanity and authoritarian agenda is a corrupt and narcissistic sin.” That accusation has followed Donald Trump after he launched a personal attack on filmmaker Rob Reiner in the aftermath of Reiner’s death.
Reiner, the acclaimed director and actor behind classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, and When Harry Met Sally, was found dead alongside his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, at their Los Angeles home on Sunday. The couple, aged 78 and 68, were discovered with injuries consistent with a knife attack. Los Angeles police are investigating the case as an apparent homicide, and the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has since been arrested in connection with their deaths.
As Hollywood and political figures expressed shock and grief, Trump broke with the tone of public mourning. In a Truth Social post, he made unfounded claims suggesting Reiner’s death was linked to his long-standing criticism of Trump, invoking the term “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The remarks sparked backlash, with critics accusing Trump of exploiting a brutal tragedy while others honored Reiner’s legacy as a storyteller who believed deeply in truth, justice, and humanity.
