A British paratrooper killed in Ukraine last week will be repatriated to the UK on Wednesday, in a case that has revealed the previously undisclosed presence of British paratroopers in the country. Lance Corporal George Hooley, 28, died in what authorities described as a “tragic accident” while observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability. His body will arrive at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on Wednesday afternoon.
L/Cpl Hooley was a soldier in the Parachute Regiment, an airborne infantry unit primarily based at Merville Barracks in Colchester. He had previously served in Afghanistan, Africa, and eastern Europe, and was due to be promoted to corporal next month.
Tributes to fallen soldier
His company commander described him in a tribute as «the glue» and «the laughter within his team». The commander added: «His energy and enthusiasm were simply extraordinary. He provided spark that lifted others, a drive that inspired, and a zest for life that reminded us all how to live with purpose and joy. And we loved him for it. George had a rare gift: a deep kindness and genuine time for everyone. Whether you were a lifelong friend, a colleague, or someone he had just met, he made you feel valued. He listened – properly listened – and he cared. His door was always open, and his heart even more so.»
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed L/Cpl Hooley’s death in Parliament during Prime Minister’s Questions. He said the soldier’s life was «full of courage and determination», adding: «He served our country with honour and distinction around the world in the cause of freedom and democracy, including as part of the small number of British personnel in Ukraine.»
