In 1990, British Airways pilot Tim Lancaster survived a dramatic in-flight emergency when the cockpit windshield blew out at 17,000 feet
on a flight from Birmingham to Málaga, partially pulling him from the aircraft. With his body exposed to freezing air,
flight attendant Nigel Ogden held onto Lancaster’s legs for about 20 minutes, suffering injuries himself, while co-pilot Alastair Atchison kept the plane under control.
Another attendant, Simon Rogers, helped secure Lancaster as the crew diverted for an emergency landing in Southampton.
Passengers watched as the crew worked to prevent him from being fully ejected. Despite frostbite and fractures, Lancaster survived.
Later featured on Mayday, the incident highlighted exceptional teamwork, quick decision-making, and the aircraft’s ability to remain stable despite catastrophic windshield failure.
