At 7:13 a.m., Andy sent a cheerful message thanking me for the evening and asking if I’d like to go hiking that weekend. I smiled at his enthusiasm, but before I could reply, another message followed. This one was longer and more thoughtful. He shared that he’d spent the morning reflecting on our conversation and felt grateful to have met someone who listened, laughed, and spoke openly.

Andy explained that his deep appreciation for kindness and patience came from a difficult chapter in his life. Losing his father at a young age and helping care for his younger siblings shaped him into someone who values making others feel safe and respected. His honesty felt sincere, not overwhelming—just a glimpse of who he truly was.

When we finally went hiking, I noticed that same thoughtfulness. He checked our pace, offered to carry my water when I tired, and paused to point out small details in nature. By the time we reached the summit, he quietly said he hoped our connection could grow, without pressure or expectations.

In that moment, I realized kindness often reveals itself slowly—in consistency, care, and simply showing up.
