Vince Zampella, the acclaimed video game developer behind hits like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order, died Sunday in a Ferrari crash on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway, NBC4 Investigates reports. The 55-year-old, head of Respawn Entertainment and former CEO of Infinity Ward, was trapped in a fire after his Ferrari 296 GTS veered off the road, hitting a concrete barrier. A passenger also died at a hospital. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010, which was later acquired by EA in 2017. He also led an EA studio behind the Battlefield franchise. Renowned for creating games with emotional depth, he was praised for crafting experiences that combined terror, heroism, and human storytelling, while remaining humble and mindful of his influence, said Washington Post critic Gene Park.
EA released a statement calling his impact on gaming “profound and far-reaching,” highlighting his role as a visionary creator whose work shaped modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions. Zampella’s legacy as a pioneering designer will continue to influence players, developers, and the industry for generations.
