A case in St. Cloud, Florida is drawing renewed attention to the risks facing vulnerable patients in home-based medical care. Authorities say a 24-year-old home health nurse has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a disabled person after surveillance footage allegedly showed mistreatment of an 18-year-old woman with cerebral palsy. The victim is non-verbal and unable to physically defend herself, according to police.
The investigation began after the victim’s mother noticed unexplained cuts and scrapes on her daughter’s face. Unable to get answers, she reviewed home security footage and contacted law enforcement. Police say the video played a key role in securing an arrest warrant.
The nurse, identified as Nia Ayers, turned herself in on May 7 and was booked into the Osceola County jail. Investigators say the charge reflects the victim’s extreme vulnerability. Ayers had reportedly worked with the family for more than a year, raising concerns about whether abuse occurred earlier.
Police are reviewing additional footage and urging anyone with information to come forward. The case has sparked broader discussions about oversight, trust, and safety in home healthcare settings.
