A case in St. Cloud, Florida is raising serious concerns about trust and oversight in home-based medical care for vulnerable individuals. Authorities say a 24-year-old home health nurse has been arrested after home surveillance footage allegedly showed the mistreatment of an 18-year-old disabled woman who is non-verbal and has cerebral palsy.
The investigation began when the victim’s mother noticed unexplained cuts and scrapes on her daughter’s face. Unable to get answers directly, she reviewed security footage inside the home and contacted police after what she saw. According to investigators, the video played a key role in securing an arrest warrant.
The nurse, identified as Nia Ayers, turned herself in on May 7 and has been charged with aggravated assault of a disabled person, a felony under Florida law. Police say the charge reflects the victim’s extreme vulnerability. Ayers was held without bond, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials are reviewing additional footage to determine whether other incidents occurred and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The case has sparked renewed discussion about safety, monitoring, and accountability in home healthcare settings.
