Tragedy at Green Valley

The early morning of December 26, 2025, began like countless others at the Green Valley Zoo in Oregon. The sky was pale, the winter air carried a sharp chill, and the paths of the zoo were still quiet as dawn stretched across the grounds. For most people, it seemed like an ordinary day. But for 32-year-old senior zookeeper Michael Torres, this particular morning would become the final chapter of a life spent caring for creatures who depended on him.

At 7:30 AM, Michael Torres walked the familiar path to the panda enclosure, carrying bamboo and fruit for Bai Yun, the zoo’s beloved seven-year-old giant panda. Over years, he had built a rare bond with the animal, earning the panda’s trust and gentle responses. Staff often noted how Bai Yun approached Torres differently, accepting food directly from him and softly chuffing at his voice.

That morning, the routine shattered. Bai Yun, usually calm, became agitated, letting out sharp vocalizations and lunging with unexpected force. Despite emergency protocols and alarms, Torres suffered severe internal injuries. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Video footage of the incident spread online, shocking staff, visitors, and the public. The zoo placed Bai Yun in isolation while authorities launched an investigation into the events. Experts emphasized that even the calmest animals can act unpredictably due to stress, medical issues, or environmental stimuli.

Michael Torres, known for his patience, passion, and deep care for wildlife, is remembered as a dedicated zookeeper who inspired colleagues and volunteers. His legacy endures in the community he nurtured and the animals he loved.
