As 2025 draws to a close, a powerful winter storm is sweeping across the United States, disrupting post-Christmas travel and casting a cold shadow over New Year’s plans. What began as a broad low-pressure system over the central U.S. has rapidly intensified, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Winter Storm and Ice Storm warnings across more than 15 states, from the Northern Plains to the Northeast.
The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic have faced the most immediate impacts. Heavy snow and freezing rain forced New York and New Jersey to declare states of emergency, while Central Park recorded its heaviest snowfall since early 2022. Surrounding areas saw up to 10 inches of snow, with rare thundersnow and snowfall rates reaching two inches per hour, making major highways nearly impassable.
Ice posed an even greater threat in parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, causing power outages and hazardous driving conditions. More than 1,500 flights were canceled at major airports, compounding travel chaos.
Meteorologists warn the danger is not over. A second arctic surge is expected to bring blizzard conditions, extreme cold, and dangerous wind chills to the Midwest and Great Lakes. Authorities urge residents to limit travel, prepare emergency supplies, and prioritize safety as the storm continues eastward.
