Buckingham Palace announced this morning the peaceful passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Katharine, The Duchess of Kent, at the age of 92. The statement was delivered by Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, who paid tribute to her life of quiet service and dedication. The Duchess passed away at Kensington Palace surrounded by family.
Born Katharine Worsley, she married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1961 and became widely admired for her lifelong commitment to music and education. She served for many years as President of the Royal Northern College of Music and, in a rare departure from royal convention, worked discreetly as a primary school music teacher under the name “Mrs. Kent.”
In his statement, Prince William praised her humility and compassion, noting her belief that music should be accessible to all children. He described her as someone who avoided the spotlight while making a lasting impact through service.
The Duke of Kent is said to be grieving deeply the loss of his wife of more than six decades. The Palace has requested privacy for the family during this period of mourning.
A private funeral will be held at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, with a public memorial planned at a later date.
