A 28-year-old man, Christian Joel Young, has been charged with multiple felonies following an alleged assault on U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) at a Sundance Film Festival party. Young was arrested Friday at a private event near the festival, facing charges including aggravated burglary and assaulting an elected official. A judge ordered him held without bail, citing public safety concerns and his prior criminal record.
Frost, the first Gen Z member of Congress, posted on X that he was punched after the assailant claimed former President Trump would deport him and shouted racist remarks as he fled. Frost was not seriously injured, and police and venue security responded promptly.
Young allegedly gained entry by jumping a fence and using a pass not issued to him. He reportedly grabbed a woman’s shoulder during the incident. Officials and lawmakers, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, condemned the assault, calling for aggressive prosecution.
Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was also targeted during a Minneapolis town hall but was unharmed.
