Police believe Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her Arizona home against her will, authorities said Monday. Nancy was last seen on the night of Jan. 31 at her residence outside Tucson and was reported missing by her family the following day after she failed to attend church.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that her home is being treated as a crime scene, citing “concerning” evidence that suggests she did not leave voluntarily. Speaking to NBC News, Nanos said investigators believe Nancy was removed from the home by force and may have been harmed during the incident.
Officials emphasized that Nancy does not suffer from cognitive impairment but has significant mobility limitations and requires medication that could be fatal if missed for more than 24 hours. Authorities noted she could not have walked far on her own, and personal belongings—including her phone—were left behind.
The search has shifted from a rescue operation to a criminal investigation, with homicide detectives involved. Savannah Guthrie issued a statement thanking the public for their support and urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement. Police say there is no indication of a broader public threat at this time.
