Elon Musk has issued a stark warning about artificial intelligence, arguing that the biggest obstacle to its future isn’t software or regulation—but power.
Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast with Dwarkesh Patel, Musk said Earth may have only months to solve AI’s rapidly growing energy demands before hitting a physical limit. Massive data centers powering advanced models consume enormous electricity, and scaling power generation fast enough, he argues, may be harder than scaling AI itself.
Musk’s proposed solution is radical: move large-scale AI infrastructure into space. He believes orbital solar power, with near-constant sunlight and no need for large battery storage, could become the cheapest and most practical option within three years.
He claims space-based solar systems could generate far more energy than Earth-based alternatives and bypass terrestrial constraints entirely.
While experts caution about debris, regulation, and feasibility, Musk says the choice is inevitable. If AI keeps accelerating, he argues, humanity may have no option but to look beyond Earth for power.
