Veteran character actor Charles C. Stevenson Jr., best known to Will & Grace fans as the affable bartender Smitty, has died at 89. His son, Scott Stevenson, confirmed he passed away of natural causes on January 19 in Camarillo, California.
Stevenson appeared in 12 episodes of Will & Grace between 2002 and 2020, quietly anchoring scenes with warmth and familiarity. Though never a central character, his steady presence made him a fan favorite, reflecting the sitcom’s strength in memorable supporting roles.
His career spanned nearly four decades, beginning in 1982 and extending across film and television. Stevenson appeared in films such as The Naked Gun, Ed Wood, Men in Black, Pleasantville, and Ghost World, along with guest roles on series including Cheers, L.A. Law, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
A Navy veteran and UC Berkeley graduate, Stevenson is survived by five children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His legacy is one of quiet excellence—the kind that leaves a lasting impression without demanding the spotlight.
