TRAGIC LOSS. The Funniest Man

James Gregory, known for decades as “the Funniest Man in America,” passed away on May 9 due to heart complications, leaving a legacy of warmth, relatability, and gentle humor. Born in 1946 in Lithonia, Georgia, he learned observation and timing working in his family’s grocery store, skills that shaped his comedic voice. After a brief military stint and years in traditional jobs, he pursued stand-up at 36, quickly connecting with audiences through clean, observational humor rooted in daily life. For over four decades, Gregory toured extensively, performing for civilians and U.S. troops alike, creating laughter in theaters, clubs, and remote military bases. He remained humble, valuing connection over fame, and mentored younger comedians generously. At home, he was a devoted uncle and family man. His comedy—timeless, empathetic, and inclusive—made people laugh while feeling seen. Though he is gone, his humor and humanity endure.
