A mysterious kitchen gadget recently went viral after a photo showed a small bowl filled with sharp, metallic tools, leaving social media users puzzled about their purpose. Many speculated they were miniature weapons, surgical instruments, or dental tools, while others offered humorous guesses. The intimidating appearance only added to the intrigue.
The truth, however, was far more ordinary: the objects were nut picks. Before pre-shelled nuts became widely available, households commonly bought whole walnuts, pecans, and almonds that required cracking at home. Nutcrackers were used to split the shells, but extracting the nut meat without breaking it was often tricky. Nut picks, with their slim, pointed tips, were designed specifically to reach into tight crevices and gently remove the edible pieces.
Once a staple in traditional kitchens—especially during holidays—nut picks have largely faded from everyday use, leaving modern viewers surprised by a tool that was once completely commonplace.
