The truth, however, was far more ordinary: the objects were nut picks. Before pre-shelled nuts became widely available, households commonly bought whole walnuts, pecans, and almonds that required cracking at home. Nutcrackers were used to split the shells, but extracting the nut meat without breaking it was often tricky.
