Kathryn Ruemmler is stepping down from her senior role at Goldman Sachs after newly released Justice Department documents detailed past correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.
The emails, made public in a recent DOJ file release, show Ruemmler exchanged messages with Epstein in the period leading up to his 2019 death. One birthday email included a personal sign-off that has since drawn widespread scrutiny. Epstein’s reply, also included in the documents, contained a crude remark that intensified criticism surrounding the exchange.
In a statement, Ruemmler said she chose to resign because the media attention tied to her prior legal work had become a distraction to the firm. Despite the announcement, she is expected to remain at Goldman Sachs through June 30.
The development adds to ongoing fallout connected to Epstein’s network and the continued examination of high-profile figures who had professional or personal contact with him.
