A Quick-Witted Call

A calm afternoon at a country club usually moves at an easy rhythm—golf bags stored away, low conversations drifting through the lounge, and the quiet clink of ice in glasses. One member had just finished his round and settled into a chair when a phone on a nearby table began vibrating insistently. With no one claiming it, he picked it up, intending to inform the caller that the owner was temporarily away. Instead, the moment turned unforgettable.

The caller, cheerful and affectionate, believed she was speaking to her husband. She excitedly described a coat she wanted to buy and asked for approval. Rather than interrupting, the gentleman politely agreed. Encouraged, she mentioned a designer handbag, then a luxury car, and even a dream house. Each request received calm approval as nearby guests slowly realized something unusual was happening.

When the call ended, he set the phone down and asked, “Does anyone know whose phone this is?” Laughter filled the room.
