How to Safely Reduce

Excess phlegm in the throat is common, especially with age, and can interfere with speaking, swallowing, and sleep. While usually not serious, persistent mucus can be frustrating. The good news is that simple daily habits often help reduce it naturally and safely.

Staying well hydrated is essential. Drinking water throughout the day keeps mucus thin and easier to clear. Warm beverages like herbal tea can soothe the throat and encourage movement of mucus. Steam from a warm shower or a bowl of hot water may also help loosen buildup.

Food choices matter. Limiting heavily processed foods and excess sugar while focusing on fruits and vegetables may support normal mucus balance. Gargling with warm salt water can calm irritation and loosen secretions.

Using a humidifier and slightly elevating your head during sleep may reduce nighttime congestion. Gentle activity and deep breathing exercises also promote natural airway clearance. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is recommended.
