In today’s social media–driven world, safety tips spread quickly, especially on TikTok. Recently, creator Mary Alice (@heyitsmaryalice) shared advice that resonated with many women living alone: avoid turning on your lights immediately after entering your home at night.
Her reasoning is simple but powerful. If your windows are visible from the street, switching on lights right away can signal exactly which unit or house is yours. In situations where someone may be watching or following, that small action could unintentionally reveal your location.
Mary Alice recounted a personal experience in which she believed a man was following her. Instead of immediately lighting up her apartment, she waited in the dark briefly. Because the interior lights stayed off, the person outside could not easily determine which apartment she had entered.
