My mother passed away when she was 70. Living in California while my parents had retired to Florida made it difficult to visit often. During our last conversation, I told her I would be flying in the next day. She sounded a little off, but I promised her I’d come straight from the airport. She told me she couldn’t wait to see me, and through tears, said, “I love you.” I replied, “I love you too. See you tomorrow.”
That night, my mother passed away. I didn’t make it to Florida as planned. Instead, I went to her funeral in Massachusetts. Losing her so suddenly taught me an unforgettable lesson. You never know when your last conversation with someone will be. We often assume we have all the time in the world to express our feelings, but life can change in an instant.
I’ve never forgotten that last call. My father also made it a point to end every conversation with, “I love you,” a tradition I’ve carried on. Both my parents are gone now, but they left me with a vital lesson: never hesitate to tell the people you care about how much they mean to you. Do it now, before it’s too late.
