My husband, James, got promoted at work, and that’s when everything changed. He demanded we split finances 50/50 knowing I settled for a part-time job in order to raise our daughter.
When Emily was born, James insisted I cut my work hours to be home with her. I hesitated—my career meant a lot to me—but he pushed, so I agreed.
I had ongoing consulting projects I wasn’t ready to give up, but James convinced me staying home was more important.
Though I kept working part-time, my career stalled.
Years later, James came home with champagne.
“Honey, I made it! I got the promotion—my salary doubled.”
I was happy for him until he said, “Now that I earn more, we should split expenses 50/50.”
I was stunned.
“James, I work part-time because of Emily—because of you.”
“That’s on you,” he shrugged.
Two difficult years passed. James became arrogant, indulging in luxuries while treating me like I was beneath him.
Then, I made a call that changed everything.
James came home devastated.
“They demoted me.”
I smiled. “That promotion? It happened because of my connection to Mike. I took it back.”
“And you know what? I took your job too.”
James was speechless.
We split up. Best decision ever.
