Sebastian Gardner, an 18-month-old boy, tragically died after being left in a scorching truck for over three hours on June 6. His father, Scott Gardner, 33, allegedly left him with a small fan, no air conditioning, and windows down as temperatures reached 111°F in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Authorities say Gardner left Sebastian to get a haircut and drink at a bar nearby. According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Gardner visited Classic Cuts before heading to Hanky Panky’s Lounge around noon. He remained there drinking until nearly 2:40 p.m., never checking on his son—even when stepping outside due to a car accident.
At 2:40 p.m., Gardner drove home and called 911 to report that Sebastian wasn’t breathing. Investigators believe the toddler had been dead for one to two hours by then. He was found in rigor mortis and pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m.
The child’s body temperature exceeded 107°F. Gardner was arrested on charges of aggravated manslaughter and child neglect.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood condemned Gardner, calling him “a human piece of garbage” and stating the act was “intentional.”
“This absolutely shocks the conscience,” he said.
